Independent Living Philosophy
The independent living philosophy is based on a person’s right to make choices and take risks. We believe that people with physical disabilities have the right to live in their community and with that right comes responsibilities. Clients are responsible for letting us know what service they require, when they wish it to be provided and how they want it done.
The Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) which include:
- Personal hygiene
- Dressing/undressing
- Oral care
- Hair care
- Preventative skin care
- Assistance with eating
- Exercises/range of motion
- Transferring/positioning/turning
The Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL’S)
- Meal preparation
- Housekeeping
- Medication assistance (limited)
- Phone use
- Escort to medical appointments (where funding and resources are available)
- Transportation/shopping (where funding and resources are available)
Eligibility
- Have a permanent physical disability or acquired brain injury
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Have a valid health card
- Be able to direct his/her care
- Have his/her medical needs met in the community
