Frequently Asked Questions

Who lives at Cheshire House Streetsville?

Cheshire House is a supportive home to 10 adults living with acquired brain injury or other disabilities. Our residents require assistance with the activities of daily living and are supported by a team of caring PSWs (Personal Support Workers).

What is an acquired brain injury?

An acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to damage to the brain that occurs after birth and may be caused by a Traumatic Event or Non-Traumatic event.

Acquired brain injuries can affect thinking, memory, emotions, behavior and physical abilities. The impact of a brain injury is unique to each individual.

Why is it called Cheshire?

Cheshire Homes International was founded in England by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire in 1947.  Cheshire originally opened his own home to persons requiring support after witnessing the devastation of the bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. Today there are over 200 Cheshire affiliate projects in more than 50 countries that provide support to people living with a physical disability.

How long has this home been in Streetsville?

The property was a 70-year-old farmhouse when it was purchased in 1975. Cheshire House was officially incorporated as a non-profit on May 16, 1975, and the first resident moved in a year later. The home celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 with a BBQ for family and friends.
